The science behind transformations: Sustaining value after implementation

Keeping a business transformation on the path to
long-term success requires more than just completion
of the initial transformation of initiatives. In fact, our
latest global survey confirms that many organizations
have underestimated the long-term efforts needed
to achieve the full financial benefit of transformation.

Our previous blog posts emphasized the importance
of protecting value from day one, including
measures that should be considered during
the planning and implementation phases. But even
after implementation, a company’s work is not
finished.

As a result of Bubbles In’s work with Univar they increased their sustainability by reducing its number of spills by 32%, while at the same time achieving a $7.7 million reduction in operating expenses.

Standards with global reach

Our research shows that, on average, 20 percent of a
transformation’s value is lost after its initiatives have
been fully executed. What separates successful
transformations from the rest? Our research
confirmed a belief that we have long held—that
making and sustaining changes to business-as-usual
structures, processes, and systems doubles the overall
transformation success rate.
Creating reusable data products and patterns for piecing
together data technologies enables companies to derive
value from data today and tomorrow.

Today’s predominant—and largely unsuccessful—
approaches to data
Organizations typically employ either a grassroots or bigbang data strategy—neither of which enables them to
make the most of their data investments.
Grassroots approach
In a grassroots approach, individual teams must piece
together the data and technologies they need. This
approach results in significant duplication of efforts and a
tangle of bespoke technology architectures that are costly
to build, manage, and maintain.
Big-bang strategy
At organizations employing the big-bang strategy, a
centralized team extracts, cleanses, and aggregates data
en masse. This approach can eliminate some of the rework
that occurs, but it’s often not aligned with business use
cases and therefore fails to support end users’ specific
needs. End users often struggle to confirm that the data
provide the necessary level of governance and quality,
which limits the time savings. Later work on new use cases
